The Best Breakfast for Managing Type 2 Diabetes

The Best Breakfast for Managing Type 2 Diabetes

If you’re managing type 2 diabetes, breakfast matters more than most meals - it sets your blood sugar for the morning.

The goal is slow-release, low-GI carbohydrates paired with protein, and steering clear of the refined sugar hiding in most cereals. Here’s how to build a breakfast that keeps your energy even.

Look for low-GI carbs.

Some carbohydrate foods are digested more slowly (low glycaemic index), which avoids spikes in blood glucose. These slow-release carbs are the better choice - think wholegrain breads and wholegrain cereals like traditional rolled oats, or a low-sugar, complex-carb muesli such as our blends. Our Healthy Blend is a good option: it’s 97% sugar-free, has no dried fruit, and is low in salt.

Combine your protein and carbs.

Eating protein alongside complex carbohydrates can help give a more gradual, even release of energy into the bloodstream. Have your muesli with some low-sugar yoghurt, or poach a couple of eggs to top wholegrain toast.

Choose your fruit carefully.

Our mueslis are great with fresh fruit, but for blood sugar the best fruits are lower-sugar and low-GI - kiwifruit, berries, grapefruit, oranges and pears, rather than banana, apple or pineapple. Avoid tinned fruit in syrup or dried fruit, which pack in extra sugar.

Stick to healthy fats.

Healthy fats - from avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil - help you feel fuller for longer. Our Healthy Blend has almonds, linseeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds.

Eat wholefoods.

Stay away from highly processed foods. A simple test: is this food still intact the way nature made it? Can you recognise the ingredients? All our cereals are made with wholefoods - you can see the grains, nuts and seeds.

A low-sugar breakfast you can trust, every morning.
