In our first blog this year, we looked at the basics of goal setting so you can ensurelife feels more balanced, purposeful and enjoyable. Here’s a practical guide to setting intentions for your health, work, home life and finances, without the pressure of rigid resolutions.
Health and wellbeing: start small, stay steady
Healthy habits don’t need to be dramatic to make a difference. Often it’s the simple routines – the ones we can return to, even on busy days – that have the biggest impact.
Eat well without restricting yourself
If improving your eating habits is on your mind, small changes might feel more realistic than strict plans. You could try making two meat-free dinners each week, experimenting with one new nutritious recipe, or having four alcohol-free nights most weeks. Swapping one daily snack for a fruit or vegetable-based option can be an easy win too. Choosing wholefood versions of staples like bread, rice and muesli helps build a healthier pattern over time – and all Te Atatū Toasted cereals are made this way.
Move your body in ways that feel realistic
When it comes to fitness, flexibility is key. You might aim for around 40 minutes of movement on most days – anything from a gentle walk to a stretch session counts. Trying one new form of exercise each month can help keep things interesting, and an exercise buddy often makes it easier to stay motivated. Try "snack" exercise, a smaller walk may seem more achievable, I have a circuit here, that takes me 20 minutes, so when I am feeling like I need some fresh air, I'll do that. Even a 10 minute walk is beneficial. Walking or riding instead of driving for short trips, stretching regularly, and focusing on simply showing up (rather than hitting performance targets) all help create habits that last.
Build wellbeing into your daily rhythm
Small wellbeing rituals can ground you. A consistent sleep routine, time set aside for connection with friends or whānau, or a few minutes of meditation can make a difference. Volunteering, even occasionally, can also bring a sense of purpose and help reduce stress. Try choosing just a few priorities at a time so life still feels manageable.
Work and career: reset, rethink, re-energise
Whether you're running a business or working for an organisation, this might be a good moment to check in with what you want from your professional life.
If you’re considering a career shift
If you feel ready for a change, it can help to update your CV and LinkedIn profile so you’re prepared when opportunities arise. You might take some time to reflect on whether you still enjoy the type of work you’re doing or whether a different path appeals. Identifying any new skills or training you’ll need is a helpful first step. Reaching out to trusted contacts for advice can ease the process, and taking your time means you’re more likely to find something that feels right.
If you want a better work life
Even if you’re happy where you are, there may be small changes that could improve your day-to-day experience. Setting clearer boundaries around work hours, especially if you work from home, can help restore balance. You might commit to learning one new skill every three months or put your hand up to support a project that interests you. And if flexibility helps you do your job well, it’s worth having a conversation with your manager (or if you work for yourself, like me, at business advisor or a trusted friend) about what might be possible.
Running a business: refocus on what matters most
For small business owners, the day-to-day demands can easily crowd out longer-term thinking. A few simple steps can help you regain clarity. Doing a SWOT analysis each year gives you a sense of where your business is strong and where there are opportunities to grow. Reviewing competitors can spark ideas, and joining a business networking group can provide support and fresh perspectives. It’s also worth deciding where expert help could free up your time – whether that’s accounting, digital marketing or cybersecurity. You might also think about what to stop doing, and what new possibilities are worth exploring.
Family, home and finances: strengthen your foundations
The goals that support our home lives are often the ones that make everything else feel smoother.
Family life
Think about the boundaries that protect your time and energy. That might mean setting days when you’re available to support others, creating a weekly family meal, or carving out some adult-only time when life is busy. You might want to do more shared activities, reconnect with friends or neighbours, or plan simple weekend adventures. It can also help to decide what you’d like to do less of – perhaps reducing screen time for everyone or sharing the household load differently.
Your home environment
Our homes play a big role in our wellbeing. Clearing out items you no longer need (one room per month is a gentle approach) can feel surprisingly energising. You might think about how your household can live more sustainably or create a maintenance list for those little jobs that never seem to get done. Whether it’s refreshing a corner of the garden, planting fruit trees, or dahlias (my weakness!!) or simply adding a few pot plants, small updates can make your space feel more inviting.
Finances
Money isn’t everyone’s favourite topic, but giving it some focus now can reduce stress later. You might explore ways to pay down debt a little faster, budget for any big purchases coming up, or track your spending to spot where money may be slipping away. Reviewing your insurance to reflect your current stage of life is also worthwhile. And if you share finances, honest conversations can prevent misunderstandings. A financial advisor can be helpful if you’d like guidance.
Choose a few priorities – not everything
You don’t need a long list to create meaningful change. Picking a couple of focus areas across work, wellbeing, home or money can make the year feel more grounded. Keep the habits small and realistic and give yourself permission to return to them gently when life gets busy. Small steps, taken consistently, really do add up. Even just starting your day with a bowl of delicious and nutritious Te Atatū Toasted is the perfect start!
