Food prices at the end of 2023 were six per cent higher than at the end of 2022, according to Statistics New Zealand, which won’t come as a surprise to anyone who has stepped into a supermarket recently.
Grocery food prices increased by seven per cent, fruit and vegetables were five per cent more expensive and meat, poultry and fish prices increased by two per cent.
Things are even more grim if you are a fan of restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food – prices in that category increased by 7.5 per cent.
Combine that with the extra costs of Christmas and the summer holiday period, it’s no wonder our bank accounts are looking decidedly unhealthy.
